Myrtleville Swimmer Completes Channel Swim

Myrtleville Swimmer Completes Channel Swim
Writes Jack White (Pics Siobhan Russell)

In a time of 12 hours and 58 minutes, Bernard swam the gruelling distance between Dover and Cap Gris Nez in France, covering around 48km in the process. The swim is regarded as an extremely testing challenge, with more people having successfully climbed Mount Everest than having swum the English Channel.
A proud and active member of The Myrtleville Swimmers, Bernard could be seen training in the waters around Myrtleville for months leading up to the swim, often spending several hours at a time in the water.
There was a huge outpouring of support for Bernard on social media while the swim was in progress, as well as upon completion, all before a welcoming party greeted Bernard at Cork Airport on his arrival home.
Whilst raising funds for Aware, one of Ireland’s foremost Mental Health charities, Bernard was also aiming to promote healthy activities and a healthy lifestyle, a theme which he’ll continue in helming the 14th Annual Centra Crosshaven Challenge on September 17th.
