Councillors Will Have Say On Carrigaline Relief Road

Writes Leo McMahon

Consultation with elected members on the Carrigaline Western Relief Road, work on which is due to commence in 2020, was requested in a motion from Cllr Liam O’Connor (FG) and supported at the monthly meeting of Cork County Council’s Carrigaline Municipal District (MD).

In a report, senior engineer John Slattery said the regional and local design office was currently developing plans for landscaping and furniture etc. ‘Once proposals are sufficiently developed, councillors will be invited to comment on these. Councillors’ comments will then influence the finalised plans’.

In particular, Cllr O’Connor asked that the office liaise with councillors about landscaping and fixed furniture such as footpaths, cycle lanes, tree planting, the new bridge over the Owenabue, signage, seating and a possible Sli na Slainte.

Cathaoirleach Seamus McGrath (FF) spoke in support and senior executive officer Nicola Radley undertook to convey the particular points made to the design office.

With regard to the scheme itself linking Ballea and Lower Kilmoney Roads, Mr Slattery said a two stage tender was currently under way to procure a suitable contractor for the main works.

‘Stage one (pre-qualification) was advertised in September with the suitability questionnaires returned by October. It is expected the shortlisting of suitable contractors will take place shortly with the stage two (works) tender to be advertised during December, all going well. Works are expected to start on site in the second quarter of 2020 with an 18 month construction period, subject to Urban Regeneration and Development Fund confirmation at tender assessment stage’, the report added.
