Carrigaline Junctions To Benefit From Education Campus Project
Writes Leo McMahon
Ballinrea Cross and Ashgrove roundabout will be upgraded as part of the project to develop the Education Campus site for Carrigaline, members of Cork County Council’s Carrigaline-Ballincollig Municipal District (MD) were told at their monthly meeting.
The Education Campus at Ballinrea Road, near Carrig Court, will comprise the new Gaelcholaiste and relocated Sonas Special Junior Primary School and Gaelscoil.
Replying to a motion from Cllr Seamus McGrath (FF), MD officer Kevin O’Regan, in a report, said special planning contributions to be paid by the developer would be in respect of:
Ballinrea Road – from Ashgrove roundabout (Cogan’s Cross) to the southern boundary of the site will be realigned with new markings and have traffic calming with uncontrolled pedestrian crossings; pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, set down areas and upgrading of the roundabout.
Cork Road – there will be a Toucan crossing to facilitiate pedestrians and cyclists, a set down area near the pedestrian link and upgrading of Ballinrea Cross to improve safety and mitigate the impacts of school related traffic.
Cllr McGrath, in welcoming the report, said the dangerous Ballinrea Cross was an old chestnut while trying to cross Ashgrove roundabout from Heron’s Wood towards the town involved using an uncontrolled crossing that wasn’t safe in his opinion.
Cllr Eoghan Jeffers (SF) had a motion enquiring about the possibility of implementing a pedestrian crossing within the vicinity of the entrance to Herons Wood and the bus stop on the road heading out of Carrigaline.
A report back stated: ‘As part of the development of the Education Campus, a pedestrian access is required from the Cork Road into the site.
‘To facilitate the existing and proposed large residential population on the eastern side of the road at this location, (Herons Wood and Janeville), a crossing point is necessary.
‘A special development contribution (SDC) was levied on the campus application to cover works required. This crossing is included in the programme of works to be carried out by the council and funded from the SDC. No start date has been submitted for the proposed works and therefore the SDC has not been received as of yet. The council has no plans to carry out this crossing ahead of the SDC being lodged’, the
