Kinsale Resident Set To Leap Great Heights For Injured Jockeys

Kinsale resident and one of racing’s top jockey’s agents, Ruaidhri Tierney, is currently on a trek to the base camp of Mount Everest to help raise donations for the Irish Injured Jockeys Fund.

Having set off on Friday last, Ruaidhri, who has some of Ireland and the UK’s top horse men on his books, including Derek Fox, Seamus Heffernan, Padraig Beggy and Colin Keane, is hoping to complete the return journey to the Everest base camp in fourteen days.

Having spent the last number of months preparing for the challenge, regularly trekking up Ireland’s highest mountain: Carrauntoohil, in all kinds of weather, he’s now off and running.

However, nothing can really prepare him for this adventure, with the potential risk of altitude sickness always a hazard, as he reaches the dizzy heights of the jump off point for Everest, at 17,600 feet above sea level.

Before he left for the monumental charity challenge, Ruaidhri: said: “This charity is close to my heart as I would have worked with and am friends with a lot of jockeys who have been badly hurt. The support they received from the IIJF was invaluable. So many of us get so much pleasure from watching these athletes competing. By donating to this charity is to show a small token of appreciation to these brave individuals who risk body and limb on a daily basis.”
