Major Public Amenity On Track For Haulbowline

Major Public Amenity On Track For Haulbowline
Writes Leo McMahon

A public recreation amenity area including a walking trail, is being developed by Cork County Council at Haulbowline, members of Carrigaline-Ballincollig Municipal District (MD) were informed at their recent meeting.
MD officer Kevin O’Regan was replying to a motion from Cllr Seamus McGrath (FF) requesting the council install outdoor exercise equipment (Tone Zone) and consider a multi-use-games-area (MUGA) for the green in the heart of Ringaskiddy village.
Mr. O’Regan pointed out that the Port of Cork owned the land at Ringaskiddy and the council’s role was only to maintain the equipment in the playground which was provided through fundraising by the local community with assistance from the local authority.
The cost of installing exercise equipment would be around €25,000 and a MUGA around €60,000.
‘Census 2016 said the population for Ringaskiddy-Loughbeg showed there were 104 children aged 0 to 9 and 66 aged 10 to 19. ‘The population of the area would not support the installation of these facilities,’ said Mr O’Regan who suggested Haulbowline, where there was a plan for a public recreation amenity as part of the Haulbowline Island Remediation Project at the East Tip on the former Irish Steel site that commenced in 2017.
The amenity, said the MD officer, would have a 2km trail which would include a distance marked 1 km loop to facilitate people being able to measure every 200m. It would also have two public toilets and car parking on site and he suggested this might be a more appropriate location where landscaping work has been completed.
Cllr McGrath asked for an update on his call for signs and markings on the road serving Ringaskiddy-Lower Harbour National School. Senior executive engineer Madeleine Healy said she had spoken to the lining contractor who would do some work.
