CCS Transition Year Musical
There has always been a strong tradition of Musical Theatre in Carrigaline Community School and this year a group of Transition Year students are going to ‘take a chance’ and take up the challenge in style!
Abba songs lend themselves to telling the story of Sophie, Donna and her three suitors, Sam, Bill and Harry. The audience will find it hard not to sing along as they are introduced to the Greek island, where the show is set, on the eve of Sophie’s wedding, Fun in the sun unravels and the students certainly rise to the occasion.
‘We have seen our students grow along the journey, from the jitters of first day auditions to a sense of confidence and excitement in the final performance,’ said Music Teacher and Co-director Nicola Cooke.
‘This is a new venture for CCS,’ added Drama Teacher and Co- Director, Ann O’Regan. ‘We have never had a Transition Year Musical before and this year, for the first time, we have invited members of our community to come along and join us for our performances, including Carrigaline primary schools and a local Enable Ireland group.
The choreography, which was led by a cohort of TY girls, is exceptional and the sets, designed by one of the 4th year Art Classes under the direction of Art Teacher John Lyons, are also worthy of note.
Musically, it has it everything, from fast paced chorus numbers like ‘Voulez Vous’ to poignant solos like ‘Slipping Through My Fingers’. Songs like ‘Money, Money, Money’, ‘Mamma Mia and ‘Super Trooper’ permeate the ages and generations alike. From the opening number it’s clear that this is an energetic, fun show and the talented 4th year CCS students are willing to give it everything.
There are even a few teachers treading the boards, to the delight and sometimes amusement of the audience. It is this mix of age and experience that adds a certain flavour of excitement and camaraderie to an already entertaining show. The students of CCS have certainly said ‘I DO’!
