Crosshaven Lanes Worth Enhancing Writes Leo McMahon
Crosshaven’s lanes should be enhanced, said Cllr Gillian Coughlan (FF) at the monthly meeting of Cork County Council’s Bandon-Kinsale Municipal District.
Much used when it was primarily a fishing village, Cllr Coughlan said these important heritage features could be improved with plates or signs showing the old names plus some landscaping where appropriate. She felt it could be a very good village renewal project for Crosshaven in conjunction with the local Tidy Towns and other interested bodies and paid tribute to those already engaged in improving the lanes.
Cllr Aidan Lombard (FG) paid tribute to executive engineer Mark Daly and staff for the excellent work in advance of the new school warden service for Crosshaven Boys National School. He also welcomed the traffic calming work at Upper Kilmoney Road, Carrigaline and called for attention to the table-top on the road outside Centra, Crosshaven.
One Way System? That the possibility of a one-way system on the road outside Hugh Coveney Pier and the one above it at Crosshaven be examined was a motion from Cllr Lombard.
At present there is two way traffic on the quite narrow upper road while the road below is two way from the Carrigaline direction to accommodate heavy vehicles exiting the pier.
While he wasn’t sure if a one-way system would work, he believed it should be looked at because it would enable a footpath to be put in and might improve traffic flow.
It was agreed to get a report from the engineer with a view to getting a traffic model.
Cllr Coughlan noted that Crosshaven hardly featured for any expenditure under the various schemes of expenditure by the MD and suggested Failte Ireland be contacted to assist in better promoting it as a tourism destination in conjunction with the MD.
Cllr Lombard asked if it transpired that the village fund money had to be deferred from Ballinspittle, it be spent on re-instating the wall and improving the overall entrance to Crosshaven village. He agreed with Cllr Coughlan adding that Crosshaven accounted for around one third of the population of Kinsale-Bandon MD. Cllr Kevin Murphy (FG) spoke in support.
Senior executive engineer Charlie McCarthy said much more could be achieved if this proposal was combined with road infrastructure, footpath and other schemes.
