Kinsale Youth Support Services Launch App
In an age when helping teenagers overcome many of the challenges they face in their daily lives, Kinsale Youth Support Services (KYSS) latest initiative – an app for mobile phones, based on its information booklet ‘Mise My Life, looks set to play a significant role in this regard. Launched at Acton’s Hotel on Friday last by the charitable organisation (KYSS), one of the architects of the project, local GP, Micheal Hynes, said: “The App now allows for 24-hour access to the information that was initially delivered in booklet form to over 7,000 homes in Kinsale and surrounding districts.” Indeed Micheal remarked: “I often see the booklet when I am making house calls, up on mantle pieces or on dressing tables but the advantage of the app is that it is directly linked into the Samaritans’ phone-line. Designed by two final-year students, studying multimedia at CIT, Brendan Flaherty and Jason Neligan, they completed the project in record time, with the app now available from the Google app store in IOS and android platforms. Acknowledging the success of the group’s latest initiative and applauding the continuing important work of KYSS, since it was established in 2010, by local Garda James O’Mahony, Ms. Sinead Glennon, who is head of mental health services with the HSE in Cork and Kerry, was particularly pleased to see that the app also contained the same valuable information as the original booklet on such topics as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, relationships, bullying, abuse, addiction and suicide. Admired as something of a flagship initiative for the rest of country, it is hoped that the success of KYSS and its recent initiative can be replicated in other parts of the West Cork Garda Division, according to Superintendent Liam Horgan Already there is considerable interest in the app, which can be simply downloaded as KYSS.
