Owenabue Car Park Set To Be Refurbished

Writes Ciaran Dineen

The Owenabue Car Park in Carrigaline is set to be re-furbished in the near future according to Cork County Council officials. At the recent Carrigaline LEA Municipal District meeting, Councillor Liam O’Connor (FG) sought an update on the council’s plans to upgrade the car park, citing that there was a need for work to be done.

Cllr O’Connor said that there were a lot of potholes on the entry road and also that much of the footpath outside Bean & Leaf Café and Carryout Off License was hazardous. He also commented that it was very important to have parking spaces repainted and adding to this Councillor Seamus McGrath (FF) asked whether it was possible for spaces allocated for disabled parking to be painted in a blue colour to make them stand out.

Parking has become an issue at the entrance of the facility in particular as some users are parking in non-existent spaces, making it a tight squeeze for those entering and exiting the car park. In response Madeline Healy of Cork County Council told the Fine Gael Councillor that there was an overall plan for the car park which would see it expanded, creating additional spaces as a result.

However, due to a third party’s ownership of a substantial part of the space that has been identified for development, the process of acquisition is in its early stages.

A report will be forwarded for the next meeting of the MD in September but Ms. Healy mentioned that while the car park itself can be totally resurfaced, they may not proceed with a significant extension until the potential move of Lidl to the Circus Field is discussed further. Therefore, in the short-term there will be no design overhaul, but there should be some form of extension in the relatively near future.
