Tribute: Michael McGloin, Carrigaline Writes Leo McMahon Tragically, his unexpected death nine days after St Patrick’s Day followed the passing of his wife Catherine nine days before the national feast day. A native of Grange, Co Sligo, Michael and Catherine came to live in Carrigaline while he was a member of the Naval Service, after which he became a popular driver with Bus Eireann on the Cork-Carrigaline route. He was a former South West of Ireland president of An Oige based at Western Road, Cork through which he went on to be a founder member of what is today Carrigaline Social Swimming Club, which meets every Thursday at 9.30pm in Carrigaline Court Hotel and was involved in Christmas Day charity swims at Myrtleville and Roberts Cove. In recent years, he very much enjoyed his membership of Carrigaline Men’s Shed. Michael was also involved over the years in the St Patrick’s Day parade and during the 1980s, the summer festivals organised by Kevin Meaney. He served for a time with the Carrigaline Community Association and worked tirelessly to get funding and the go-ahead for a much needed group sewerage scheme for Kilnagleary. He was also a pioneer in getting computers installed in the former Carrigaline branch library off Main Street. A gregarious man with a happy disposition and a lovely smile, Michael loved to socialise and meet for a cuppa and a chat. Most of all, he was devoted to the care of his wife who suffered ill health for a number of years and special thanks were extended at the Mass to the staff of CUH and Marymount Hospice. Michael McGloin is survived by his brother John Joe and sisters Philomena and Anna; his brothers-in-law Pat and Benny and sister-in-law Catherine and other relatives and friends in Sligo, Leitrim and Belfast. Fr Charles Nyhan CC, who was celebrant at the Requiem Mass in the Church of Our Lady and St John, Carrigaline on March 30th, said it was of some comfort that Michael and Catherine were not separated on this earth for long and were now reunited in eternal life. Mass was followed by the funeral at the Island Crematorium near Ringaskiddy. Rest In Peace.
