Willie Walsh Nominated For National Volunteer Award

Cork Volunteer Centre is delighted to announce that Carrigaline local Willie Walsh has been nominated for a Volunteer Ireland Award. Over 1 million people in Ireland volunteer and these awards aim to say thank you for the hard work and dedication of volunteers across the country.

With volunteers ranging from age 16 to 86 from eighteen counties, this year’s shortlist is a showcase of the breadth and depth of volunteering in Ireland. From community shops to sports clubs to befriending, volunteers have a major impact on communities across Ireland every day.

Willie has been volunteering in a number of roles with the Carrigaline Family Support Centre in Cork for almost 9 years. He always makes himself available whether it’s to man an event, fix the community bus or simply to have a chat.

Willie was also instrumental in setting up the organisation’s travel assist programme which mainly helps wheelchair users and individuals who need support to get to specialised treatments. Willie travels on the bus when needed to help with getting the wheelchair on and secure but also to keep the person company. Willie also somehow finds the time to volunteer with some other organisations in the village too and is well known in Carrigaline for his role as Chairman of the hugely successful Carrigaline United AFC.

According to Cork Volunteer Centre Manager Julie Connelly “It is always heartening to see the sheer amount and variety of volunteering that goes on throughout Ireland. The shortlist provides just a snapshot of our strong culture of volunteering in Ireland and it is great to have Cork represented by Willie on the national stage. I’d like to congratulate Willie and all of those on the shortlist – the difference you make to our communities cannot be overstated.”

The eleventh Volunteer Ireland Awards take place on Friday 7th December in the Carlton Hotel, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15. Shortlisted nominees along with their family and friends will be treated to a night of celebration where the winners in each category and Ireland’s Volunteer of the Year for 2018 will be announced.
