Passage West School of Taekwondo kicked off 2020 with a haul of 44 medals across 2 tournaments recently.
The first outing of the year was at the Scion Championships which took place at Neptune Stadium. 25 competitors took part with 9 competitors facing the daunting task of stepping onto the mats for the very first time and they didn’t disappoint, bringing home 10 medals between them. These 9 competitors are graduates of the successful Little Warriors program in place at the club and the hard work by both students and coaches is now coming to fruition. The more seasoned juniors and seniors took to the mats in the afternoon with another 22 medals won by 15 competitors.
The following week the club travelled the short distance to Waterford to compete at the ITA Munster Open Championships the only Sport Ireland recognised Munster title for ITF Taekwondo. The standard on display was exceptional over both days with almost 800 competitors competing. The club were represented by 11 competitors who took home 12 medals, including 6 Munster Titles.
Joey Shaw was in impressive form; winning 3 Munster titles in Sparring, Patterns and Special Technique. Finna Hales claimed another Munster Title with gold in Sparring after a closely fought final against her club mate Laura Butler both girls put on an excellent display and the result could have gone either way, Laura also claimed a Bronze in Patterns. Brendan Geary claimed a Munster Title with Gold in Sparring and Pijus Markevicius won Bronze in Patterns. The previous day Jason Shaw claimed the first Munster Title of the weekend with Gold in Sparring and a Bronze in Patterns. Connor Sullivan took Silver in Sparring and Stephen GearyBronze in Patterns.
Club Instructor Master Delea stated it was an incredible week for Passage West Taekwondo, not just because of the medals won for the club, but for the fantastic spirit and camaraderie shown by our competitors, both successful and not so successful. He also thanked the parents for their massive support.
