Alec Byrne grabs the winner as City get first league win of 2020

Carrigaline local Alec Byrne scored the winner for Cork City FC as they beat Finn Harps 1-0 for their first league win of the season.

The midfielder scored a header midway through the second half on a night which finished with him being crowned Man of the Match.

The former Carrigaline United player, graduated from City's youth academy in 2017 when he signed his first professional contract at the club. In the three years since, he has established himself at the heart of the midfield of the Rebel Army.

The arrival of Neale Fenn as City manager midway through the 2019 season was the catalyst for Byrne to become a staple at the club. The twenty year old made eight appearances last season for the club, and so far had featured four times in 2020.

Alec plays in a central defensive role for City, playing in a trio with club captain Gearoid Morrissey, and a rotated pairing of Henry Ochieng and Cian Coleman.

The Carrigaline man has received huge support locally, including from Carrigaline Furniture & Carpet Centre who are sponsoring the player through Cork City’s Sponsorship program. (https://www.carrigalinefurnitureandcarpets.ie/)
