Ballinhassig actress stars in Amazon Prime’s My Lady Jane

Tara Maher

Máiréad Tyers is a 25 year old actress hailing from Ballinhassig. The town, which has become known for its GAA connections as it is home to RTÉ broadcaster Jacqui Hurley and the Cork hurling goalkeeper Patrick Collins. Its latest star, doesn't brace the field but instead has hit screens and is following the footsteps of Cillian Murphy and Siobhan McSweeney on her way to becoming Cork’s next star.

Tyers acting career began when she was 14. She joined the Gaiety School of Acting in the Granary Theatre in the City before relocating Rada, a prestigious drama school in London.  She auditioned with two Shakespearean pieces and an excerpt from the play Desolate Heaven by Cork playwright Ailís Ní Ríain.

During her degree, she was spotted by Kenneth Branagh, then president of Rada, who handpicked her to spend five days shooting on the award-winning drama Belfast. Even though she doesn't have a starring role, she received her first film credit, a catalyst to her recent success.

She was awarded the role of Jen in Extraordinary, penned by Fermanagh-born screenwriter and comedian Emma Moran. The series is set in a world where everyone gets a superpower at the age of 18. Tyers plays 25-year-old Jen who struggles being the only person she knows who is an ordinary human. She acts alongside Cork actress Siobhan McSweeney, who rose to fame as the dry humoured Sr. Michael in Derry Girls.

Máiread Tyers as Susannah in My Lady Jane

Her acting heroics in Extraordinary earned her a  BAFTA nomination in the category of best female performance in a comedy but unfortunately lost out to Black Ops actress Gbemisola Ikumelo.

In 2023, she starred in thriller Dead Shot and Lady Jane Grey is Máiréad Tyers latest project to hit screens. The show, which was commissioned by Amazon Prime,  has captured the hearts of many and we hope its renewal will be announced soon.

If you were left disappointed by Bridgerton’s Season 3, Amazon Prime’s My Lady Jane is bound to fill the void. Think a period drama combined with a rom-com with a sprinkle of fantasy mixed with villains, arranged marriages, lust to love and queer romance.

Set during the tudor-era in England, the show is a satirical re-telling of the doomed Lady Jane.

It's witty and sharp and what makes it even better, Ballinhassig actress Máiréad Tyers is one of the stars of the show. Tyers Cork accent is unmissable and her use of the infamous leeside insult (hint: it starts with the letter “l”) is timed to perfection.
