Ballygarvan 3-6 Ballinhassig 0-10
(JJ Hurley)
Ballygarvan staged a second- half goal fest to beat their neighbours, Ballinhassig in the Procure.ie SE Junior A Football Championship at Shanbally on Friday night.
In total control in the first half, Ballinhassig looked to have this game wrapped up only for Ballygarvan to score three goals in as many minutes as O’ Connor, R O’ Halloran and Niall O’ Dowd found the net on 48, 49, 50 minutes.
It was all a far cry from the opening 30 minutes as Ballygarvan had only managed two points from frees and the favourites for the SE Junior A Football Champions looked all at sea.
Ballinhassig had raced into an early lead as the two O’Sullivans, Diarmuid (3) and Darragh (1) had their side ahead to one solitary free after 19 minutes from Evan O’Connor.
From there to the break, Ballinhassig were in charge of this contest as Darragh O’Sullivan, Charlie Grainger and Patrick O’ Regan gave the Blue half of the Parish a 0-7 to 0-2 first half advantage, as O’ Connor had added another free on 25 minutes for the reds.
With Ballinhassig making all the running in the first half, Ballygarvan made an early impression as Gary White sent over a 45 after the resumption, only for Charlie Grainger to extend Ballinhassig’s lead.
Ballygarvan were again guilty of some poor shooting before Stephen Fenton sent over a beauty from an Evan O’ Connor pass.
Daniel Mackey added another score on 43 minutes when a goal chance was on but Fintan O’ Leary extended the Blues tally to 0-9 to 0-5 on 45 minutes.
However, the introduction of Kevin Lyons seemed to change the direction of the game, as the avalanche of goals arrived in quick succession.
Diarmuid O’Sullivan almost threw his side a lifeline following a neat Brian Lynch pass, but the goal chance went a begging.
A point at either end from Tom Madden and O’Halloran finished the scoring for the evening but Diarmuid O’Sullivan had a late goal chance but his palmed effort went wide
