The annual Basant/ Kite Flying Festival is set to take place in Carrigaline this Saturday, June 1st. The event was organised by Amna Walayat in collaboration with Goodday Cork, and is supported by Cork County Council.
The Festival will include a wide range of exhibitions and activities. There will be kite flying demonstrations as well as kite making workshops, a culinary exhibition, a film screening, a mango party, a designated picnic area and plenty of food trucks.
This year, Cllr. Audrey Buckley will attend the event, deputising on behalf of the Lord Mayor.
This is the third year the festival has taken place in Carrigaline, and each year it becomes more and more of a success.
Basant is one of the most celebrated festivals in the Indian Subcontinent, associated with spring and the color yellow. While Basant holds religious significance in Hinduism, marking the arrival of spring, it has become popular across all cultures in the region. During this time, the landscape is adorned with the vibrant yellow hues of vast mustard and sunflower fields, and locals traditionally dress in yellow while engaging in kite flying activities amidst the harvest season after a quiet winter.
Since 2022, the Basant Festival has been an annual event at Carrigaline Community Park in County Cork in support of Cork County Council. A large number of participants enthusiastically join the event to fly kites and are encouraged to dress in yellow attire.
