Bid To Increase Public Lighting At Monkstown Writes Leo McMahon
‘Where does the lighting end?’ That was the question from Cllr Marcia D’Alton (Ind), who along with Cllr Seamus McGrath (FF) had a motion at the monthly meeting of Carrigaline-Ballincollig Municipal District (MD) that the area along the R610 (Strand Road) Monkstown from Hayes’ Lane to Murph’s Pub be considered for inclusion in Cork County Council’s 2017 Public Lighting Programme. In a report, senior executive planner Ms. Clare Cronin said the Part 8 planning drawings for the proposed Greenway project which was recently advertised, made provision for new lighting along the route from the point where the existing public lighting ends. This prompted the question from Cllr D’Alton, who recalled that the former Passage West Town Council had always sought public lighting as far as Murph’s pub but the money wasn’t there. Prior to the town council being abolished, it had the money to fund one light at the end of Hayes’ boreen for the benefit of residents and it was put in. She asked for clarification at the next meeting on where the lighting ends. Cllr McGrath welcomed inclusion in the Greenway but this hadn’t even reached the planning stage and argued that the lighting was needed regardless of this. He urged it be kept in the mix. Senior executive officer Ms Anne Collins said there had been a preliminary meeting about the Greenway. Area engineer Ms Madeleine Healy said a list of proposed public lighting works for the MD would be presented but warned that the budget was small and what was referred to in the motion would wipe most of this out.
