Former Fianna Fáil Minister Michael McGrath has been selected as the new EU Commissioner for Justice.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced her selection in Strasbourg today.
Mr McGrath’s role as the EU Commissioner for Democracy, Justice and Rule of Law will involve addressing any breaches of the rule of law by member states.
The former Finance Minister’s role will also include responsibilities regarding consumer protection, anti-corruption, and implementing legislation such as the General Data Protection Regulator (GDPR).
In a statement, Mr McGrath said: ‘The portfolio is a vitally important one for Europe: protecting our democratic values, rule of law and the rights of our citizens is fundamental to the future development of the EU and of the single market.
‘It is the first time that Ireland will hold this portfolio and is a recognition of our standing as a country with a strong democratic and open society.’
Taoiseach Simon Harris congratulated Mr McGrath and labelled this announcement as a ‘vote of confidence in Ireland’s candidate’, in a statement today.
European Parliament hearings will be taking place over the coming weeks and the new EU Commission is expected to take office towards the end of the year.
Everyone at The Carrigdhoun congratulates Mr McGrath and wishes him luck in this role.
