Â
Billy Walsh, a man who dedicated a life-time of work to Carrigaline GAA was honoured on Saturday last as the club named its new Juvenile pitches in his honour.
Â
For his wife, Mary, and their children, Aishling, John and Liam, it was a gesture that was very much appreciated.
Â
‘I would like to start by thanking Steve and the club by honouring our dad in a special way, I would like to thank everyone who came today and it was great to see that the lads came down from the hill, Na Piarsaigh, too,’ remarked Liam.
Â
‘For those of you who knew my dad, he was a huge advocate for the GAA, the people and the community, and the underage section was always to that forefront.
Â
‘It’s the life-blood of every club and having kids coming through the gate and having the skills and values are very important for the future and these pitches will play a huge part of that future, as it helps to nurture the next generation of players, coaches and supporters.
Â
For me and my family, I would like to thank you all for coming and celebrating my dad’s memory.’
Â
 Â
A man whose interest in Gaelic games began with his beloved Na Piarsaigh, Saturday’s ceremony was attended by many of his former teammates, where Billy lined out on the football sides.
Â
For his current club, setting out his contribution to the Carrigaline outfit, club chairman Philip O’ Reilly paid tribute to Billy’s many years of service.
Â
‘Billy through his actions, selflessness, and commitments through the years, particularly to Carrigaline and his former club Na Piarsaigh inspired so many young and old, he said.
Â
‘It is a fitting legacy that the new juvenile pitches will be the breeding ground of our next generation of talent for our boys and girls , but, more importantly, for the fun and enjoyment that comes with our games.’
Â
In addition to the pitches, the new pathway with the accompanying floodlights is an important asset.
Â
While works at the grounds have been aided by grants, the club is extremely grateful to Stephen McCarthy from Astra Construction, who has backed the club in its ambitious plans.
