Carrigaline’s Niamh McCarthy Claims World Silver
Writes Jack White
Carrigaline’s Niamh McCarthy has added to her impressive competition medal haul by winning a discus silver medal at the Para Athletics World Championships at the Queen Victoria Olympic Park in London on Saturday morning.
Niamh’s fifth throw of 26.17m was good enough to secure a precious silver behind Paralympic champion Raoua Tlili of Tunisia.
Afterwards McCarthy said: “It was a hard competition and my mind let me down a bit. I had to keep a cool head. I know I can throw better but I still got a medal so I can’t complain; I’ll take silver. There was a lot of pressure on my shoulders and it wasn’t my best throw but a medal is a medal.
“I have a lot of family with me today, so it’s great to do this in front of them. London nearly feels like home to me, it’s only across the water. My mother is English as well so I had a lot of support from that side of the family. It’s just great to win Ireland’s first medal of the championships!”
Niamh first emerged onto the Paralympic Athletic scene in 2013 and has been going from strength to strength ever since. The IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha in 2015 were her first major championships, where she secured a bronze medal before claiming a new European record on the way to winning a silver medal at the Niamh 2016 IPC Athletics European Championships in Italy and at her first ever Paralympic Games in 2016 Niamh claimed a Silver medal, set a new European record and achieved a personal best with a throw of 27.05m.
