The 2019 season of Carrigaline Tidy Towns campaign was launched by their Chairman Liam O’Connor at the Tidy Towns headquarters in the Owenabue Carpark on Monday evening. Liam welcomed all and outlined the successes of last year. National Tidy Towns Gold Medal Winners 2018, 313 marks in 2017, 321 in 2018 (8 Mark gain!)
Awards won last year: National Clean Air Award, Best Project in a Large Town award at the Muintir Na Tire Pride in Community Awards and Second Place in the Cork County Litter League Awards. Carrigaline was a national finalist in the Biodiversity awards in Dublin Castle and RTE came down showcasing the town for the SuperValu ads.
Liam outlined the plans for this year: X3 Public talks held in the hotel/Parish hall on Biodiversity / Barn owls / Organic vegetables. National Tree planting event held 06th April – 40 Families planted 40 trees. Dog Poo waste awareness event planned for next week. Chewing gum litter awareness event planned for May. Sick of Plastic event in Supervalu – Saturday April 13th.
The importance of our waterways/systems in the community. Event on the heritage and biodiversity of the Owenabue. Two schools working on a project which will be presented at an event here on Saturday 12th May at 2pm.
Also, in attendance will be Kieran Murphy the community water officer who will give a workshop. Improvements to the park – New Flower/shrub beds. Wildflower meadow in park. Projects with some resident associations planned (Community gardens). Cork County Litter league – Aim to win this year! Runners up last year.
Liam thanked Cork County Council, Supervalu main sponsor, John Cummins, Pavillion, all the local business who support us each year and all the volunteers who come out throughout the year to support. Out each Saturday at 9.30 am and each Wednesday at 7 pm.
The launch was attended by a large gathering of volunteers and supporters. Also present were Michael McGrath TD and Councillors Séamus McGrath and Marcia Dalton. Following the launch all were treated to hot food and refreshments courtesy of David Collins SuperValu Main Sponsor.
Tree Planting Day
40 families came along and supported the Carrigaline Tidy Towns Tree Planting Day on Saturday last at the embankment on the eastern side of Mount Rivers adjoining the new relief road. Five members of the GAA club helped out with the project. A wide selection of trees were planted including many native broadleaf trees and a selection of fruit trees.
Tidy Towns continues to promote tree planting throughout the parish. The County Council and all builders and developers in the town plant hundreds of trees every year. Anyone interested in the tree planting project contact Tidy Towns.
