It was announced over the weekend that Fianna Fáil Seamus McGrath will contest the upcoming general election.
Despite no date being set for the election, the Carrigaline based councillor will run alongside Tánaiste Micheál Martin.
Cllr. McGrath received the most first preference votes of any elected councillor in Ireland in the local elections that were held in June, and is the Cathoirleach of the Carrigaline Muncipal district.
Cllr. Seamus took to Facebook to say he was "truly honoured" to have been selected as a candidate to contest the election.
"After serving as a county councillor for 17 years, I think the time is right for me to take the next step and I will embrace the challenge with everything I've got."
Seamus' brother, Michael McGrath, was announced as European Commissioner-Designate for Democracy, Justice and the Rule of Law.
