The Crosshaven Traditional Sail is set to return for its 30th anniversary from Friday, June 13th to Sunday, June 15th, promising a weekend filled with maritime tradition and coastal charm. Since its inception in 1995, the event has grown from a small gathering to a beloved highlight of Crosshaven’s social calendar.
The second weekend in June will see a host of events, including a captivating parade of sail, a display of traditional boats, and a much-anticipated firework display.
The first Traditional Sail was spearheaded by Wietse Buwalda and Thecla Cronin, aiming to provide a platform for boats outside established sailing organisations. Over the years, it has fostered a strong sense of local camaraderie, with businesses and pubs joining in the festivities with BBQs and fancy dress parties.
Mark Bushe, a long-time supporter and former Chairman of the event, lauded the dedication of individuals who have contributed to the festival's enduring success. He specifically acknowledged the passion and commitment of Pat Tanner, Susanne Deane, Derval O’Shea, JP English, Patsy Fegan, the Crosshaven vintners and current chairman James Fegan over the past three decades.

Bushe fondly recalled early editions, such as the prize giving in 1995 which took place from Witse Buwalda’s pick-up truck, and the excitement of Friday evenings when flotillas from Cobh and East Ferry would sail into the harbour. At its peak, the Traditional Sail attracted over tens of boats, even drawing entries from as far afield as New Zealand.
This year, thirty boats are confirmed for the rally, with particular anticipation surrounding the recently restored Illen boat from Baltimore. A highlight of the weekend will be the Saturday night firework display, followed by a Sunday morning breakfast barbeque on the Hugh Coveney Pier, organised with the assistance of the 1st Crosshaven Sea Scouts. The weekend will conclude with a final parade of sail. Organizers are also hoping for a strong showing from West Cork, with the potential appearance of traditional mackerel and lobster boats.
The organisers of this year's Traditional Sail would like to thank Murphys for sponsoring the event, and express their gratitude to all local businesses who have contributed to its success over the last 30 years.
