Crosshaven Sailor To Represent Ireland Johnny Durcan (aged 16) from Point Road in Crosshaven is one of a 30-strong Irish contingent to represent Ireland in the ‘KBC Laser Radial Worlds 2016’ Youth and Men’s Championships, which takes place in Dún Laoghaire Harbour from 23rd to 30th July. 350 competitors from 48 nations will compete in the competition seen as the Olympics for Lasers, a single-handed fast athletic boat, the most popular dinghy class in the world. Johnny, a committed sailor who sails out of the Royal Cork Yacht Club, has been sailing since he was 10 years of age and is now considered one of Ireland’s next generation Olympic sailors. A member of the Irish Sailing Association’s high performance elite “Sailing Academy” he has enjoyed competitive success abroad, most recently taking a top ten position at the massive ‘Laser Eurocup’ event in Hyeres in France. This is the first time he will race in a Laser Radial World Competition and is following a gruelling training regime for the competition. “I can spend 4-5 hours per day on the water and train in the gym about four times every week. If I want to reach my ambition to compete in the Olympics I need to be at the top of my game and not just have skill, but mental and physical fitness as well. I’m really looking forward to the Laser world. It is another step in gaining experience to fulfilling my Olympic dream”, says Johnny. KBC Bank is sponsoring the championship. Roisín Healy, KBC Bank Hub Manager based in Wilton Shopping Centre said, “We are delighted to sponsor this world-class sailing event. Our sponsorship acknowledges our commitment to supporting community and youth initiatives and recognises the hard work and dedication that is involved by everyone concerned in hosting this event. We wish Johnny and the Irish team every success and look forward to being part of what promises to be a great sporting occasion.” Johnny’s twin brother Harry, also a sailor in the Optimist dinghy class will be following Johnny with keen interest. “We have sailed together in competitions and now that I have changed to the Laser class the friendly rivalry between us spurs us both on to be the best we can be in every race.”
