Culture Night 2024

By Eve Lonergan

Cork Culture Night is back with a bang this year, with a chock-a-block schedule of events taking place in Carrigaline, Passage West, on Friday September 20th. The evening is set to be a cultural feast, celebrating the diversity, creativity and community spirit of Carrigaline.

The night promises a wide range of activities, with live music across the town to set the festive mood.

With performances from a senior men’s choir, youth bands and Carrigaline Pipe Band taking place across the evening in the Bandstand from 4-6pm, the Parklet and the Car Park on Main Street from 6-8.30pm, you won’t have to wander far or wait long to hear some great tunes.

Alongside the live music to lift the spirits, there will also be a range of cultural dancing to bolster the festivities. From traditional Irish to Indian, these events are sure to be a celebration of the multicultural community of Carrigaline.

In efforts to keep our native language alive, members of Carrig na Caint will be on the streets encouraging people to practise their cupla focal this culture night.

In addition, a bilingual show for kids is taking place in the Lions Youth Club at 4pm to provide an interactive, vibrant approach to the Irish language.

To celebrate both our natural landscape and our local artistry, the lighting of the herons will take place on Main Street at 6:45pm. Commissioned by Carrigaline Tidy Towns and Cork County Council, the sculpture by artist Mick Wilkins symbolises the community’s appreciation of the wildlife and biodiversity of the locality.

In Passage West, an interactive music workshop for 7-12 year olds will be taking place. Spin the globe and travel to India, Tibet, New York, Africa and Latin America with Dr Dara O’Brien in the Passage West Library.

From 5pm – 9pm you can discover the eclectic collection of artefacts detailing local and regional history at Kinsale Museum. Learn about the Kinsale Giant, once the tallest man in the world, as well as the Battle of Kinsale and the Sinking of the Lusitania among a host of other interesting historical artefacts and curiosities. Volunteers will be on hand to guide you around the museum.
