Over 9,000 people had visited Camden Fort Meagher, Crosshaven from the date of its re-opening in April up to July 5th, members of Carrigaline Municipal District (MD) were informed at their recent meeting.
Responding to a motion from Cllr Audrey Buckley (FF) seeking an update, senior executive officer (SEO) Maurice Murphy reported a steady increase in visitors each month.
The number of daily tickets sold up to early July was 7,604 while 736 annual passes had been purchased. The number of group visitors was 315 and annual pass holders had reached 452.
Visitor numbers in a day could range from zero to 406 but the average in May and June was 130 per day, said Mr Murphy. There were 1,383 on ‘Your Council Day’ on July 5th.
‘Weather is a significant factor and this represents a significant challenge for our café operator,’ he continued and the council continued to work with the operator to explore options to alleviate the challenges faced.
Overall however, the SEO stated, the feedback was ‘exceptionally positive’. Pets were welcome on the site but visitor must keep their pet on a lead and clean up after their pet.
‘A letter of acceptance has issued for the preferred candidate for the post of manager and once signed, that person will be formally appointed. The assistant manager post attracted 51 applications which are currently going through the shortlisting process and the council hopes to hold interviews shortly.’

Thanking Mr Murphy for his comprehensive update, Cllr Buckley said she was delighted to see the number of visitors was so strong to date. Seconding, an Cathaoirleach Cllr Seamus McGrath (FF) concurred adding: ‘it’s early days yet but so far so good.’
