500km Beara, West Cork to Breifne, Leitrim
Bebhinn O'Sullivan (formally of Beara, West Cork) and her son Daniel Tulloch who are now living in Fountainstown are amongst a family group (originally from Castletownbere), who are taking on a 500km walk to raise money for charity.
The O’Sullivan family from Castletownbere commenced their 500km walk from Beara 2 Breifne on Saturday 26th June starting in Glengariff Woods, in aid of Marymount University Hospital & Hospice, West Cork Community Palliative Care and Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.
The journey is following in the footsteps of Donal Cam O’Sullivan Beare’s epic march across Ireland in 1602.
Trekking through 8 counties, from West Cork, over the Ballyhoura mountains, alongside the river Shannon before reaching the final destination of Breifne, Leitrim around the 10th July. All funds raised will go to Marymount Hospice and Community Palliative Care Teams, West Cork Palliative Care and Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.
The siblings are taking on this challenge in memory of their late father, John Finbarr O’Sullivan, who was a well regarded local historian on Beara Peninsula and was so lovingly cared for by the community palliative care team and Marymount Hospice in his final stage of life. Their initial target is to raise €2,500 which is the cost of one week’s care for a patient. They hope to exceed this amount several times over in-order to support this fantastic cause.
Training began in earnest over 6 months ago and their target is to walk 8-9 hours a day for two weeks to cover the significant distance. This is essentially doing a marathon a day for 2 weeks.
