Go-ahead For Passage Urban Renewal Plan Writes Leo McMahon
The go ahead has been given for the production of a new Urban Renewal Plan for Passage West, members of Cork County Council’s Carrigaline-Ballincollig Municipal District (MD) were informed at their monthly meeting.
Cllr Marcia D’Alton (Ind) had a motion on the issue and welcomed the report in response to this for an update on the funding awarded to Passage West for the production of an Urban Renewal Plan which she, along with South and East Cork Area Development (SECAD) submitted on behalf of Passage West Tidy Towns and the council with the overall aim of creating a centre for the linear town.
MD officer Kevin O’Regan, in his report, said it was proposed that the scheme should mainly focus on a health check of the town, a strategic plan and one physical project and the council had liaised with SECAD for a plan that was more extensive in order to assist interested local groups. ‘Passage West has potential. The difficulty it has is to maximise that potential. This is an opportunity to encourage all existing and potential stakeholders to engage in a conversation with a view to developing a practical, strategic but achievable plan that will set out how over a defined time, the town can achieve its goals’, it was stated in a letter of clarification from the council to the Department on June 30th, reported Mr O’Regan.
‘On July 13th, I received an e mail from the Department to advise that a decision had been made to the request to amend the original proposal and approval had been given to proceed with the revised project as outlined. SECAD was advised immediately and asked to commence the process which given that we are now in the summer holidays, will probably take a while to get up and running’, he added.
Cllr D’Alton and fellow members welcomed the news on the project which has received a grant total of €56,000 from the council and SECAD.
