Holy Bees
A swarm of bees landed high up in the front of our church here in Carrigaline. They normally move on but they seemed to like our sacred space for some reason. They started building comb and setting up home. They had no intention of moving on. They became known as the ‘Holy Bees’!
Fr.James, our local priest who has been a beekeeper for many years, hired a cherry picker and was able to get up close to them. He slowly transferred them into a new bee box and moved them to a new home in our neighbouring Tracton Parish. Bees need to be moved at least 5km away, otherwise they would return to their original spot, our church. The latest word from Fr.James is that they have settled in great at their new home and continue making the most of the beautiful weather.
Pipe Band
Band practice is high on the priority list for the Carrigaline Pipe Band as they prepare for the World championships in Glasgow on Saturday August 15th. Meanwhile three members of the Pipe Band excelled in solo competitions last weekend at The CLASP (Competition League for Amateur Solo Pipers) at the Inveraray Highland Games in Scotland.Arthur Bass got 1st in Grade 3 Piobaireachd, 1st in Grade 2 March and 2nd in Grade 2 Strathspey & Reel. Paul Sweeney came 1st in Grade 3 March and 2nd in Grade 3 Strathspey & Reel. Bobby Curtain came 3rd in Grade 2 March and 3rd in Grade 2 Strathspey & Reel. The Pipe Band will play at the Kilbrittain festival this Sunday where they will lead the fancy dress parade at 7 pm. Men’s Shed
Members are enjoying the warm weather and mid-summer in the Carrigaline Men’s Shed. A big and overdue clean-up of the Shed and surrounds has been completed and the place is looking good. The Men’s Shed Choir had practice on Tuesday morning July 28th and in the afternoon sang for the residents and staff of Beaumont Care Home before taking a break for the month of August. The annual Men’s Shed outing took place on Wednesday last, this year they went to Kilkenny and they called to the Ferrybank Men’s Shed on the way up where they got a great welcome. In Kilkenny they visited a number of attractions including the castle and Saint Canice’s Cathedral. The Firgrove Hotel, Mitchelstown was their stop on the journey home for dinner and then back to the Shed for 9 pm. Walkers leave the Shed at 11.00am on Mondays and the cyclists go for a spin to Crosshaven on Fridays. The gardeners are harvesting a great variety of produce in the polytunnel some of which they cook in the kitchen. The cooks in the kitchen have become very apt at making fresh vegetable soup which is greatly appreciated. The men in the engineering section have a selection of stationary engines and exhibits ready for the Carrigaline Men’s Shed stand at Robertscove Vintage Festival this Sunday, August 2nd and at Ballygarvan Show on Saturday August 22nd. Picnic in the Park
Pioneers from Cork city and county are invited to a novel event on Saturday August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption, in Tramore Park, Kinsale Road, Cork. Families and friends are invited to gather for a picnic and walk in the park from 12 noon to 2.00pm. The event is being organised by the Cork Diocese Pioneer Council. New Road Open
The new section of the M28 from the Barnhely roundabout to the Port of Cork roundabout opened to vehicular traffic on Tuesday morning. No pedestrians or cyclists are allowed on that section of roadway. The new road now allows traffic coming from Carrigaline and from the western side of Ringaskiddy to avoid going through the village, but has access to a number of factories, the Port of Cork, Loch strand, the Island Crematorium and the Irish Naval headquarters.
New Bridge
On Friday, July 24 the Bailey Bridge over Slí Carrigdhoun was put in place overnight. The bridge will service the Maryborough Hill traffic on a temporary basis when the existing bridge will be demolished and replaced by a new bridge to extend over four lanes of traffic in the newly constructed M28. Both Slí Carrigdhoun and the Maryborough Hill road were closed to facilitate the works. Carr’s Hill, the main road to Douglas and the Ballinrea Road remained open to traffic. Some traffic was diverted via Passage West and more via Kinsale Road. Huge advancements are evident on the progress of the M28 which is due to open in 2028.
Tidy Towns
Carrigaline Tidy Towns are thankful for the help they received and continue to get at watering a number of flower beds and roundabouts during this very dry spell. Volunteers continue to water all the other flower tubs, planters, hanging baskets and many small flower patches around the town. Concern was expressed recently at the amount of bottles that were dumped at the bottle bank which was already full. People at large are asked to continue helping Tidy Towns to keep Carrigaline bright, clean and tidy.

After their usual hard morning’s work litter picking, deadheading and watering (with watering cans only) last Saturday morning Carrigaline Tidy Towns volunteers were given a treat. Huge thanks to Paul in Co-Op Superstores (Carrigaline) and the staff of Esquires Coffee for the wonderful tea and scones that went down a treat. Well-deserved by those who work so hard and so consistently to keep our town clean.
Homecoming for Minors
Carrigaline GAA are inviting all to join them as they give a heroes’ welcome to Eoghan Ahern and the victorious Cork Minor Footballers following their incredible All-Ireland success. They will pack the club grounds and show appreciation for an unforgettable achievement. All are invited to the Carrigaline GAA Club this Sunday, August 2nd at 6:30pm
to celebrate with one of the finest and amazing Cork Minor teams.
The Kinger Run Club
After running 5km every day throughout June, Tomás King has decided to keep the momentum going by setting up the Kinger Run Club in memory of his brother, Darragh King ‘Kinger’. The Run Club is for everyone, whether you run regularly, are just starting out, or simply want to get out and meet people. Wednesdays 7:30pm at Carrigaline GAA Club
Sunday 9:00am at Crosshaven Walk Car Park. Come along, bring a friend, and join them. Everyone is welcome.
Hurl and Foot Golf
Carrigaline GAA, Camogie and Ladies Gaelic Football are having a Hurl and Foot Golf classic fundraiser on Saturday August 29th sponsored by Munters. After a very successful fundraising event last year they are going for it again this year.
Playground Reopened
The Carrigaline community playground which has been upgraded and refurbished at a cost of €30,000 has reopened again. Thanks to the playground committee for organising the fundraising to Cork County Council and SECAD and all others who contributed to the funding and providing such a wonderful amenity. The playground has been thronged with families and children since enjoying the different components of the facility. The organising committee has now been stood down. All who use the playground are asked to respect it and until a rubbish bin is provided to please take their own rubbish home.
Carrigdhoun Comhaltas Up and Running
Carrigdhoun Comhaltas is delighted to announce the launch of a new Comhaltas branch serving Carrigaline and the surrounding area. Beginning this September, traditional Irish music classes will take place at Gaelcholásite Carraig Úi Leighin on Tuesday evenings, offering a welcoming environment for children, teenagers, and adults of all ages and abilities.
Tuition will be available on a range of traditional instruments, including fiddle, banjo, bodhrán, mandolin, flute, tin whistle, button accordion, and concertina, with additional instruments offered where there is sufficient interest. Whether you are picking up an instrument for the first time or looking to develop your skills, experienced tutors will help you grow in confidence while enjoying Ireland's rich musical heritage.

Munster Fleadh
A large contingent from Comhaltas na Dúglaise attended the Munster Fleadh Cheoil which was held in Lismore, Co Waterford last week. All who attended expressed the view that the event was extremely well organised The branch Céilí Band ‘Drombeg’ were placed 2nd out of eight in the hotly contested senior Céilí Band competition and are heading for the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Belfast. Others who qualified for the all-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil were Tim O’Sullivan first in Lilting and second place in Whistling and Róisín Breathnach in Comhrá Gaeilge.
On the Land
Harvesting machinery and trailer loads of barley grain and straw are travelling through the village on Main Street during the current hot dry spell of weather which is ideal for grain growers harvesting the winter barley. The potato crop is excellent but could do with a drop of rain as could the grassland.
Road Closure
Ballinrea Road has been closed in recent weeks to facilitate the laying of ducting from the Ballinrea solar farm to Raffeen substation. Ducting is also being laid along Shannon Park Road, Cogan’s Road, Cooney’s Road and the Ringaskiddy Road to link up the supply route.
