Hop Island to Passage West Greenway Must Be Retained In County

A call by Cllr Marcia D’Alton (Ind) that the area between Hop Island and Passage West, including the Greenway, remain within Cork County was fully supported at the recent meeting of Carrigaline-Ballincollig Municipal District (MD).

She had a motion requesting the MD to write to the Minister for Local Government Eoghan Murphy TD and all other relevant decision influencers seeking this because the Greenway was recognized as being of critical importance to the future development of Passage West and an asset which could best be realized if it and the town were managed under one authority, i.e. the county council.

In debates on the proposed new boundary on December 4, Cllr D’Alton pointed out, city councillors had before them a ‘final map’ and their county counterparts a ‘working draft’ that were different with the former extending the city boundary to the edge of the Passage West instead of as far as Hop Island, Rochestown.

‘One of Passage West’s greatest assets is the much used Greenway running along the line of the former Cork, Blackrock and Passage Railway. Should the city boundary as indicated in its ‘final map’ be adopted by Ministerial Order, it would split Passage West from one of the key assets on which it hopes to build its future’, she warned………
