Huge Improvements For Local Bus Routes

Huge Improvements For Local Bus Routes

Writes Ciaran Dineen

The fracas surrounding the 220/220x and 223 bus services continued this week as councillors were updated by Bus Éireann Regional Manager, Martin Walsh, at the latest meeting of the Ballincollig – Carrigaline Municipal District (MD)on Monday.

Walsh stood in front of the district’s councillors with a report on the current situation. He stated that later this year there will be a full timetable change for the 220 bus which will mean buses every 15 minutes from 7am to 7pm Monday to Saturday. The meeting did not hear a specific timeline from Mr. Walsh, but were told that the change has been approved and they will await details from the NTA. Bus Eireann are expecting a delivery of new buses this year and are currently recruiting drivers to double their resources on the route.

There is also due to be improvements to the 220X and the 223, with the much mooted Passage West to Carrigaline Route on the way also.

The high level of frustration expressed by the public in recent weeks resulted in Michael McGrath TD, taking the Minister for Transport, Shane Ross, to task in Dáil Éireann in relation to the diabolical situation that has ensued with buses in the Carrigdhoun area over the past number of months. With a continuous flow of complaints directed to McGrath and many local councillors in the constituency, the attention of Bus Éireann Regional Manager, Martin Walsh was caught.

Cllr Séamus McGrath, Cllr Marcia D’Alton and Cllr Michael Frick Murphy have been particularly vocal and have relayed the complaints from the public to Bus Éireann.
