Last Sunday Mass in Carrigaline For Fathers Fogarty And Nhyan

Writes Leo McMahon

There was a large congregation on Sunday, September 4th as Frs. Pat Fogarty PP and Charlie Nyhan CC concelebrated their final Mass in the Church of Our Lady and St John, Carrigaline assisted by deacon Bro Giacomo Girardi, MScC.

There was beautiful music from the church, folk, youth, gospel and An Chor Gaeilge as well as from cantors Pat Daly, Marguerite Crowley, Marian Collins, Agnes O’Reilly, Mary O’Connor, Clare McCormack and Jack Eaton. Sinead Murphy was co-ordinator and Frank Garvey was organist. The offertory procession comprised sacristans and/or secretaries Ber Parfrey, Nellie Duane, Kay Murphy and Mary Fehilly and youth from the parish read the Prayers of the Faithful.

Prior to the final blessing, Willie Walsh on behalf of Carrigaline Parish Assembly, paid tribute and expressed best wishes, saying: ‘Fr Pat is open-minded, progressive and inclusive. Fr Charlie has a genuine interest in people, approachable, warm and caring. It is their diversity that created the glue during the challenging time of Covid and built the bond of why we are still believing in God.’

There was also a tribute from Bro Giacomo. Fr. Fogarty returned thanks on behalf of himself and Fr. Nyhan and specially praised the different ministries and groups in the parish including the late Mary Dullea (sacristan) and Kay, Salma Delly and their predecessor Ber in the office and wished the incoming Mons Aidan O’Driscoll and Fr James McSweeney all the best.

When Mass concluded, the priests were greeted outside and there was a recital by Carrigaline Pipe Band.

A special function in their honour has been arranged for Friday, September 16th at Carrigaline GAA pavilion at 8pm. Everyone welcome.
