Speaking at the reception held in the clubhouse last weekend, Ken Dennehy, Chairman organising committee, went onto outline the initial idea of the event some months ago to arranging meetings with Dave Hall, FAI Masters co-ordinator to arrange the fixture. After many meetings, the match has been approved and date fixed and the club are now looking forward to holding one of their most prestigious matches in the history of the club since its foundation back in 1972. He went onto thank the support and assistance given by his committee and to event sponsors, Trevor O’Driscoll and Dave Thompson of Excell Sealants; Peter Collins of the Carrigaline Court Hotel; Brian Martin of Martin Scaffolding, 96FM and Niall Cotter from Blackwater Motors. Ronnie Whelan, no stranger to the Cork region, spoke of his delight in being able to bring a team to Carrigaline over the August Bank Holiday weekend, and although many of his players are ‘in the mature age bracket and in their 40’s and 50’s’, they will give it ‘their best shot and do everyone proud’ on the day. CEO Irish Masters Dave Hall remarked that it will be a very special day for the club in Carrigaline and added that an event of this nature brings the whole community together, and Carrigaline can be rightly proud of their strong club and community spirit. The Carrigaline soccer club has always been to the forefront as regards raising funds for certain charities over the years, with funds on the day going towards the Football For All programme at Ballea Park which has been running very successfully at the club for the past few years with many youngsters involved present at the launch. To date, four Liverpool FC Legends have been confirmed – Ronnie Whelan, Ray Houghton, Phil Babb and Alan Kennedy – who between them have a host of league, cup and European medals – with at least to more legends within the coming weeks and will be managed by celebrity solicitor Gerald Kean from Cork. Liverpool legends guests will include Greg O’Halloran and Joe Gamble of Cork City, with a few more names added shortly. The days activities will commence at Ballea Park at 12.30, with bouncy castles for the youngsters and a specially erected marquee taking up most of the available car park space at the club, with the match scheduled to kick off at 3pm, followed by post match entertainment, including live music and bubbleball amongst other events planned for the day. Tickets for the days activities will be €15 for adults and €5 for children under 15 and will be available from the clubhouse at Ballea Park, the Carrigaline Court Hotel and at Footgolf, Ringenane Golf Course Kinsale from Monday 9th May.
