Meet the candidates: Margaret Murphy O'Mahony, Fianna Fáil

In the run up to this years Local Elections taking place in June, The Carrigdhoun will be speaking to candidates who have been ratified by their party or Independents, in both the Carrigaline Local Electoral Area and the Bandon-Kinsale Electoral Area.

 

 

Margaret Murphy O'Mahony is an Irish former Fianna Fáil politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork South-West constituency from 2016 to 2020. The former TD, who became the first female in the Cork South West constituency to win a Dáil seat in the 2016 General Election, topping the poll, She had been a member of Cork County Council for the Bandon-Kinsale local electoral area from 2014 to 2016. Margaret and her husband, Paddy have two sons, John and Philip. She is a qualified Life Coach with Neuroscience Practitioner and works with adults with intellectual disabilities.

 

Journey To Politics

“I grew up in a very politically active household”. Margaret said, “My late brother, Con Murphy, RIP, was a Town Councillor for twenty years.  I was a Town Councillor from 2004 to 2014. In 2014 I became Bandon"s first female Mayor and again served as Mayor in 2010.  I was a County Councillor from 2014 to 2016.  I became the first female TD ever elected in Cork South West in 2016 and served as a TD until 2020, during this period I was the only female TD in all of Cork (County and City)”.

 

On Housing:

“I am passionate about ensuring everyone has a house or an apartment to live in.  When I was starting off my adult life there was never a question about not being able to buy or rent a house, it may not have been big, it may not have been fancy but we all could aspire to living in a house. It is all very different now. The answer is supply and affordability.”

On Health:

“Fair access to health.  Increased home-help hours and increased home-care packages. Improved disability services.”

 

On Cost of Living:

“More supports given to the squeezed middle who often fall through the cracks of targeted supports.”

 

Why Should People Vote for Me?

 “I have vast political experience; I can see how things work through the system. I am hardworking, passionate and grounded.  I am a ground hurler, what you see is what you get. I am empathic and sympathetic. I have great heart; I am the type you could pass the ball to in extra time when you are two points down!”
