New Twinning Opportunity Between Carrgaline & Newport News

Writes Ciaran Dineen

Discussions are underway to develop a new twinning opportunity for Carrigaline after Chairperson of the Carrigaline Municipal District (MD), Cllr Marcia D’Alton (Ind) was recently contacted by the Mayor of Newport News, a City based in the State of Virginia, USA.

The Mayor reached out to show their interest, highlighting that there are historical links between Carrigaline and Newport News that date all the way back to 1621, when two Carrigaline men landed on the shores of the James River, in the colony of Virginia before developing a large homestead on which is now Newport Newspoint.

Councillors were delighted to hear the news, with Cllr Jack White (FG) adding, “I know that many people both here in Carrigaline and Newport News would be very enthusiastic in making that link happen. It would be great for Carrigaline to diversify and spread its wings even further.”

The Councillors now need to go and discuss what the benefits and costs are involved with formalising the potential twinning opportunity before coming to a final decision with the Council Executives. A report will be presented to the Councillors sometime in March where they will have the opportunity to progress the matter further.
