Progress On Carrigaline Traffic Projects
Writes Leo McMahon
A progress report on various traffic management projects in the Carrigaline area was outlined to members of Cork County Council’s Carrigaline-Ballincollig Municipal District (MD) at their recent meeting by traffic and transportation senior engineer, Peter O’Donoghue.
‘Peak hour traffic congestion is a significant problem affecting Carrigaline and Ringaskiddy. Existing signalized junctions have recently been upgraded giving additional operational efficiency and improvement works are at various stages of advancement while further analysis of critical links is ongoing in an effort to identify short term improvement measures’, he said and referred to the following:
Bank Of Ireland Corner – The push button controlled crossing has been linked directly to the controller for signals at the corner. This has reduced the incidence of conflicts between the pedestrian crossing and signals and feedback to date is Positive.
Bothar Guidel Junction – Signal control equipment has been replaced with up-to-date equipment. The result is that operation of the signals is more robust and increased capacity has been provided. There was major work on this by executive engineer Gillian Vaughan, said Mr O’Donoghue.
Crosshaven Road To Bothar Guidel – This link suffers from severe congestion and in response, the council has engaged Arup consultants to develop a suite of options to improve traffic flow as well as pedestrian and cycle movements (a presentation was given Arup at the MD meeting).
Janeville-Carrig Na Curra Junction – Current difficulties being experienced are being rectified by the traffic signals installation contractor and council staff will continue to liaise with the contractor to remedy current problems.
Carrigaline Western Relief Road – Project being progressed by the regional and local area roads office and detailed design and contract documents being prepared by Atkins consultants with a view to going to tender in 2019, subject to funding. An application for funding was made to the Department of Local Government under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund.
Overall Transport Strategy for Carrigaline – Preparation of a consultant’s brief will commence shortly with a view to the project commencing in early 2019.
