Get ready to unwind and rejuvenate at ReCoop, a new wellness facility opening soon in Carrigaline. Specialising in contrast therapy, the facility offers a combination of sauna and cold plunge experiences. When speaking to The Carrigdhoun, co-founders Scott Hedderman and Dylan O’Keeffe were putting the finishing touches on their latest venture, set to open in the coming weeks.

Like every great idea, it came after a pint or two, but the following day, they came together with a concrete business idea and approached the GAA club for the use of land. After a series of committee meetings, they were given the green light to move forward with their new venture.

ReCoop will feature an eight-person sauna, three plunge pools, a shower, drinking water, and changing facilities—everything you need to relax, refresh, and revitalise.

While sauna and cold plunge facilities have become a nationwide trend, particularly along Ireland's coasts, Carrigaline had yet to see something of this calibre. The concept might seem unusual to those unfamiliar with it: alternating between icy cold water and intense heat. But there’s a method to the madness. Just as applying ice to an injury can reduce swelling, and heat can alleviate pain and discomfort.

The "hot sauna, cold plunge" technique, which originated in Nordic countries, is known for its incredible health benefits. The combination of hot and cold therapy promotes circulation, alleviates muscle pain, supports the immune system, detoxifies the body, and improves mental health.

Both Dylan and Scott have reaped the rewards of saunas and cold plunges in the past and spotted the gap in the market for establishing something similar locally.

Setting up ReCoop at the Carrigaline GAA club made perfect sense. The location is at the heart of the community, frequented daily by locals, with ample parking and close proximity to Carrigaline village and the Crosshaven-Carrigaline walkway.

Since announcing the launch on Instagram earlier this month, excitement has been building. ReCoop is open to everyone—not just GAA club members. In fact, Scott and Dylan hope the facility will become a go-to spot for the whole community. "We want people to come by, put a load of washing in, and then pop in for a sauna and a plunge," Scott explains. "Or maybe drop the kids off at training and take a break with a sauna and a cold dip."

To start, the sauna will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with times to be confirmed.

Both founders are looking forward to opening their doors and have big plans for the future. They aim to collaborate with local favourites like Chats Café and Gorgulhos Pizza to create a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere for the community. While the sauna will remain stationary for now, they’re open to the possibility of making it mobile once operations are up and running.

ReCoop is set to become a refreshing addition to Carrigaline's wellness scene, offering the perfect balance of relaxation and recovery for all.
