St Peters National Champions Writes Howard Crowdy Goals from Danielle Hayes and Cliona Fahy sealed a very historic win for St. Peter’s Community School, as they became the first school to retain the Bank of Ireland Schools Senior B Girls National Cup following a 2-1 win over Mulroy College at the AUL grounds Dublin during the week. St. Peter’s took the lead in the first half, only for three times winners Mulroy College to equalise shortly afterwards, to leave the rest of the game on a knife edge. However, with minutes remaining, last year’s captain and current vice captain Cliona Fahy stepped up and scored the decisive goal, much to the delight of the St Peter’s camp and their supporters and to send the trophy back to Cork. Upon their arrival back in St. Peter’s Community School in Passage West, school principal Derek Dunne remarked that this was the third All Ireland soccer trophy to come to the school in the past twelve months and the second time for the senior B Girls’ team. He went on to congratulate the players on such a magnificent performance and said that the school was proud of their marvellous achievement and the sportsmanship they showed, on and off the pitch. Team coach Finbarr Loftus, now coach to three All Ireland winning soccer teams in less than a year, also paid tribute to the players for their discipline, belief and their attitude towards the game, which won out in the end. He also acknowledged the contribution made by his assistant coach Linda McGrath and the support given by school principal Derek Dunne and the staff of St. Peter’s, who accommodated both him and the players during their All Ireland campaign again this year.
