Issues On Carrigaline’s ‘Southern Relief Route’

Carrigaline Municipal District (MD) unanimously supported a motion by Cllr Liam O’Connor (FG) urging Cork County Council to take charge of the main road section of Forest Hill estate to install urgent traffic calming measures.

The road, part of a southern relief route, has seen significantly increased traffic, including buses and trucks, due to the closure of Ferney Road. Residents are concerned about speeding and the lack of safe pedestrian crossings, particularly for children. The road is currently private as the estate has not been officially taken in charge, creating a "limbo situation."

While a senior engineer noted that traffic calming is "unusual" for a distributor route, the Council will consider measures once the road is taken in charge. Cllrs supported the motion, citing increased speeding, resident concerns, and a precedent for installing measures before an entire estate is taken in charge, with the motion being sent to the roads design office and planning directorate.

In his career, he has trained thousands of students and produced hundreds of black belts. As a senior member of IJKA Europe, he is one of few non-Japanese practitioners to hold the rank of 6th Dan, awarded by Master Sensei Kato. After a challenging grading, Master Kato praised the 72-year-old as a "role model," emphasising that "Karate is a way of life." Michael views karate as a philosophy extending beyond the dojo walls.
