14th Annual Centra Crosshaven Challenge Triathlon

Committee chairman Bernard Lynch remarked that the event had grown steadily from its humble beginnings of just seven teams, and has grown steadily, with well over 200 athletes taking part in last year’s event, both individually and in teams of three and has managed to raise in excess of €180,000, with funds generated for various clubs, organizations, schools and groups in the locality. “There hasn’t been a club, school or organization in the Crosshaven area which hasn’t benefitted from the Triathlon down the years and we are delighted to be able to support and give something back to the community through the running of the event,” he said, and added that due to the popularity of the event the format will change to cater for ever increasing numbers of entries next year. A special welcome was given to some of the members of the newly formed Crosshaven Triathlon Club who will, no doubt, be strong supporters of their very own triathlon in the future. This year six beneficiaries were announced at the launch and they include the Crosshaven Boys NS for the upgrade of their IT facilities, the Crosshaven Development Committee who intend to erect a telescope and seating area at the top of Camden; the Crosshaven Active Retired, the Scoil Bhride Parents Association for the development of a garden space within the school grounds, the Crosshaven Camogie Club for the purchase of equipment and finally to the Camden Fort Meagher for assistance for their recent spectacular 1916 Centenary Weekend. As usual course comprises of a 500 metre swim from Currabinny Pier to the Hugh Coveney Pier; a ten kilometre cycle to O’Leary’s Cross along the Carrigaline Road and back and finally a 5.2 (note) kilometre run around the village, with the finish line situated outside Centra supermarket on Strand Road, where there will be street entertainment, refreshments and a festival atmosphere. Bernard Lynch went on to acknowledge assistance given by main sponsors Lucozade Sport and Centra Crosshaven and the large group of volunteers, who include the Gardai, RNLI, Coast Guard, Civil Defence, Crosshaven Walking Group and launch hosts Rivers End Café.
