25th Lions Club Cycle Launched Writes Jack White The Carrigaline & District Lions Club Annual Cycle Classic was launched last Friday, June 24th, by Senator Tim Lombard, former Olympian Derval O’Rourke, as well as event co-ordinator Mark Ginn and Club President Roy Jolly. The 2016 event is again sponsored by Mr John O’Connor of Victoria Cross Cycles. The cycle classic is the club’s major fundraiser and is now celebrating its 25th year, coming from humble beginnings in 1991 when just 18 cyclists raised €2,500. Suppport for the cycle has grown steadily over the years and last year, approximately 150 cyclists took part. Over the 25 years, over €675,000 has been raised for local charities with themajority of the money raised being donated to cancer related charities. This year’s cycle takes place on October 8th, starting in Carrigaline, heading along the Wild Atlantic Way to Timoleague, looping back to The Old Head Of Kinsale and returning to Carrigaline. Established in 1988, Carrigaline & District Lions club is a very active and well supported Lions Club. In its short history it has become one of the leading clubs in Ireland and has raised over €2 million since its formation. The club has provided 16 sheltered housing units in Carrigaline as well as the new Youth Centre.
