Ballygarvan Camogie Club Awards
Writes Dolores Kidney (Club PRO)
The Ballygarvan Camogie Club awards were held a little bit later than usual this year due to different circumstances and also at a new venue, Ballygarvan National School Hall. It was the perfect place for what was a great night full of medals, trophies, cups and absolute delight and pride. The club Chairperson Martin Hourihan, along with Ballygarvan and Cork Minor players Sarah Ahern and Ellen O’Regan had a very busy night handing out awards to the winning teams and individual players.
First up for their medals were the U13 South East winners who played Tracton in the Carrigdhoun final. Recognition was given to U13 players Lucy Casey, Tara Lyons, Ava O’Callaghan and Sophie Elliffe who played on the U13 Carrigdhoun panel for 2017.
Next to receive their winning medals were the U15 South East winners who also played Tracton in their final in the late Autumn.
The individual awards followed and they were given out as follows:
U14 Carrigdhoun players: Eppie O’Sullivan, Ellie Finnigan, Caoimhe McAndrew and Anna Geary.
Cork U14 players: Tara Crowley, Molly Kelleher. Caoimhe McAndrew, Anna Geary
Primary Games: Caoimhe McAndrew
Cork U16A Captain: Cliona O’Leary
Cork U16B player: Kate Dorney
Cork U15 player: Rachel Crowley.
The final presentation of the night was made to the triumphant U12B County Champions. This team went from strength to strength throughout the season and got themselves to the County Final against Fr. O’Neill’s. In what can only be seen as a “nail biting” final, this team of young players carried it all the way to the final whistle to win their first ever big match. Each player proudly accepted their Championship medals from Sarah and Ellen. The team on the day of their final were presented with new zip tops from the Camogie Club as a mark of recognition. Today they are still wearing them with pride. What followed was a great speech from their coach Morgan Sheehy, who was very proud of every player who he said gave 100% commitment throughout the entire season and also thanked the parents for their contribution to helping out with the training, matches and getting involved when needed.
Another season in the underage is closed officially closed and the club is well into its new season and already teams are competing well in training and games. A special thanks to the club sponsors Down 2 Earth, The Five Mile Inn, Jason O’Brien Cars and Ryan’s Supervalu Grange who have been a great support to the club the seasons.
