Ballymartle Woods recently celebrated the official launch of its newest walking trail as Cllr Marie O’Sullivan performed the ribbon-cutting, marking another valuable addition to the local community’s amenities.

The occasion was a proud moment for local volunteers who had long campaigned for Coillte’s investment in the forest, which not so long ago had faced the possibility of being sold at auction.

Addressing a large crowd that included Cllr Ann Bambury, Hamish Adams detailed how the €30,000 project was financed through an outdoor recreational grant, supplemented by generous contributions from the community and local businesses. Support came from Centra Riverstick, Eli Lilly, Thermo Fisher Scientific Cork, Moog Ireland, Heart Angel, and Adams Donnelly Solicitors.

A new information board has also been installed, showcasing the area’s rich local history compiled by Fergal Browne.

Cllr O’Sullivan described the opening as a clear example of what can be achieved when all stakeholders work together for the benefit of the community.

She praised the determination of local residents in seeing the project through and confirmed that both she and Cllr Bambury will continue to seek funding for further development.

Coillte’s Bernard Burke also hailed the project as a model of collaboration between Cork County Council, Coillte, and the Ballymartle Woods Group.

He extended thanks to Hamish Adams and his team, as well as to the local Coillte staff and contractors Michael and Jerry Crowley for their dedication.

Describing Ballymartle Woods as a “natural gem,” Burke said the new trail enhances opportunities for recreation and reflection, promoting both wellbeing and a deeper connection with nature.
