Calls For Shuttle Bus To Ringaskiddy’s Employment Hotspot

Writes Ciaran Dineen

At today’s Municipal District meeting of the Carrigaline LEA, Councillor Seámus McGrath (FF) has called on Cork County Council to engage with local private industry to initiate the operation of a shuttle bus from Carrigaline to Ringaskiddy.

The motion was put forward bearing in mind the huge employment numbers in Ringaskiddy, with many workers commuting to and from Carrigaline on a daily basis. Councillor McGrath said this would be a great way of reducing single-car usage, saying that “it’s no longer good enough to continue with the status-quo”. In a written response from Cork County Council they stated that they would be “happy to engage” with the private pharmaceutical companies in the area and that The Traffic and Transportation section of the Council was the most appropriate section to engage with on this manner.

Councillor McGrath received support from other Carrigaline LEA representatives on his motion, with Cllr Marcia D’Alton (Ind) being the first to commend Cllr McGrath on his suggestion, while Cllr Ben Dalton O’Sullivan (Ind) claimed that it was a “great initiative”. Councillor Liam O’Connor (FG), who himself works for one of the pharma businesses in the harbour town, did express that previous attempts at private level to introduce car-pooling did not prove to be successful, with very few employees taking part in the scheme, but did also lend his support. Cllr Audrey Buckley (FF), queried what was the situation with Park & Ride proposals that have been raised in previous years, with Cllr McGrath explaining that space adjacent to the Shannonpark Roundabout was allocated for this some time ago. He went on to say that this was another example of why it is now time for significant capital investment from both Cork County Council and relevant private industry.
