Carrigaline Country Market Buzzing In Band Hall
Writes Leo McMahon
At 8.30am on Friday, March 9th, an exciting new era dawned for Carrigaline Country Market when it opened at its new weekly location, the Pipe Band Hall next to the Church of Our Lady and St John.
A warm welcome awaited from chairperson Kathleen Dempsey, secretary Veronica McCarthy, treasurer Janet O’Sullivan and controller and PRO Eileen Kelly when we arrived just after 9pm and the latter reported that the market was absolutely buzzing on the first day at its new home.
Only the best of farm and home-made produce is on sale every Friday morning from 8.30 to 10.30am and all at very reasonable prices. What’s more, the country market is the place to meet and enjoy a cuppa and a scone or apple tart for just €2.50 in an adjoining room which, to mark the special occasion last Friday was free to all.
On display in the band room last Friday was a fantastic array of top quality produce, (some gluten free), including soups, quiches, eggs, fresh fruit and vegetables, a wide variety of freshly baked cakes, scones and breads as well as jams and preserves and also daffodils and kindling. All were selling fast which kept Valerie Andrew and Jennifer Bryan busy at the cash points.
In the coming weeks, the market will also stock garden plants, flowers, salad/deli and seasonal produce, crafts and knitwear, all produced or made by its members in accordance with the ethos of Country Markets. Orders for collection can be made in advance.
Of course, every Friday can start as early as 5.30am for several Country Market members who are busy baking or harvesting produce while others arrive early to prepare the stalls and check the produce brought by suppliers from all over South Cork.
Each supplier has a number to ensure privacy but also traceability and every item is checked by the market controller and helpers. Everything is invoiced and proceeds of each sale go to the supplier minus a percentage to cover band hall rental and a fee to the national body Country Markets Ltd.
