31 teams were whittled down to 12 to reach the finals of the Carrigaline Junior mixed under 12, 14 and 16 year olds last weekend. Following months of intensive matches throughout the winter, the finals day saw the Carrigaline under 16 players take the runners up plate, sponsored by Kerry Food Ingredients.

Carrigaline Junior Committee Representative, Ken Murphy explains that, “this is a hugely important winter tournament that gives our junior players the opportunity to continue playing and competing off-season. Many teenagers, especially girls, stop participating in organised sports.

The average age of dropout is at around 11 years old, coinciding with the transition from primary to secondary school. Carrigaline Tennis Club started this tournament in 1993 with the aim of keeping our junior players participating in sport, during those crucial teenage years.

Now in its 32nd year, it is a very popular Cork county wide sporting event. Our local sponsors, Pet Essentials and Kerry Food Ingredients, ensure the tournament’s continued success and we greatly appreciate their ongoing generosity.”
