Carrigaline Macra – Annual Ag Talk
Writes Cormac Lehane P.R.O
On Monday 12th November, Carrigaline Macra hosted their annual Ag Talk in the Rochestown Park Hotel. The much-anticipated event on the Irish agricultural calendar was another huge success with high profile speakers such as Patrick Coveney, Chief Executive of Greencore; John Jordan, Chief Executive of Ornua; Prof. Gerry Boyle, Director of Teagasc; Gerry Murphy, Meteorologist of Met Éireann and Bryan Doocey, AIB Agricultural Advisor. The event was chaired excellently by Damien O’Reilly, RTE Journalist and presenter of the show Countrywide.
Patrick Coveney gave an outline of various issues affecting Irish agriculture including Brexit and the prospect of the revival of the sugar beet industry in Ireland. He also outlined his company’s place in the food market here, in the UK and elsewhere. John Jordan described how they are representing the members of the Ornua dairy co-op. Prof. Gerry Boyle suggested how Ireland could best tackle the multi-faceted issue of climate change. Gerry Murphy gave a detailed analysis of how to predict the weather and how he sees the climate changing over the coming years and decades. Bryan Doocey also spoke about the range of supports which AIB have for farmers. There was also a variety of agri stands on show in the room on the night including Eurogene, Munster A.I, Progressive Genetics, Dairygold, Southern Farm Fuels, The Farm Store, Grasstec, Grasshopper (aka True North Technologies), Teagasc, Moocall, Howard Farm Feeds and O’Donovans Engineering. There was also a free raffle on the night where audience participants won two sets of two tickets to the Irish National Dairy Show. They also got the chance to win an iPad provided by AIB, the sponsors of the night. The agri talk is a free event for the agricultural community organised by Carrigaline Macra every year. Other events include their annual New Year’s Eve Ball which is always a hugely well attended, sell-out event as well. Information on both events can be found on the club website www.carrigalinemacra.ie . The club also takes part in activities such as drama, music, comedy, debating, public speaking, travel, community involvement, agriculture and sports. All this information can be found on their website or through their social media channels which include Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram. Give it a go!
