Carrigaline Photographic Society was born 1985, and they are celebrating in style with their new exhibition “Small Spaces”.

The name “Small Spaces” draws inspiration from the fact, it is in fact held IN a small space, revealed Tony O’Leary, Chair Of Carrigaline Photographic Society.

The first in a two- part series of Exhibitions, is running in Carriagline for the month of April, with the second instalment planned for June of this year.

He also recalled how forty years ago, an enthusiastic group met in the then Cogans pub, on the Main Street , and formed the Society. There have been vast changes in photography over the years, the change from film to digital, to the use of phones, but Tony says that their original objective remains the same “to develop and improve the knowledge, practice and appreciation of photography as an ART form.”

“ Our first field trip was to Gouge Barra, and later, in 1986 amid great excitement, the society covered the opening of the  new Cummins complex by the then President, Dr Patrick Hillary. We have had many exhibitions and field trips since then, and been involved with the Irish Photographic Federation. Some of our members have been awarded with International and Irish awards, and sadly some members have passed away. Over the years we have made firm and lasting friends” he added.

The group is open to new members, and Secretary Brian Turner said “the group is a small, warm, friendly group, very inviting.. There is a huge interest in photography in the Carrigaline  Crosshaven area, and we extend an invitation to local photographers to pay a visit to our meetings, and maybe consider joining the group. This month for instance we will be discussing Photoshop, Light room etc.”

Society membership is open to anybody over 18 years of age. You are invited to come along to any of our meetings, which are held in St Marys hall in Carrigaline on the last Wed of each month at 7:45pm. Beginners are welcome.
