Carrigaline Pipe Band : World Silver Medal
It has been some year for 13 year old Daniel Mulcahy from the Carrigaline Pipe Band who added a World silver medal to his already impressive haul of medals and trophies this season which he won in the Juvenile Section 1 March Final at the World Solo Drumming Championships which were held in Glasgow only last week. Over 120 competitors from across the Globe took part in the championships held in the Caledonian University and Daniel had to qualify from his heat to the semi finals and eventually finals. The final consisted of 12 drummers, and Daniel was denied the Gold medal by just one point by his Scottish competitor, but was delighted with his silver medal showing being the highlight of his drumming career to date in the Carrigaline Pipe Band. Daniel remarked that the judges looked for rhythm, presentation and drum tune amongst others and were very precise, looking for the slightest slip up in a very competitive competition. It adds to the already impressive list of trophies won by Daniel this year alone which include the Munster U14 title, Runners Up in both The Ulster Championships and All Irelands – not bad at all considering Daniel only took up drumming two years ago! A Junior Certificate student from St Aidans Community College, Daniel realises that he will have to step back to study for his Junior Certificate next year, but will no doubt find time to continue to play and compete in the Carrigaline band for many years to come.
