Cork Harbour’s Hidden Treasure Exhibition by Shaunagh O’Connell-Quinn
“After four long years studying Visual Communications there was never a doubt where my niche resided, photography. Therefore I have decided to build my major project around the medium. The topic was an obvious one, where do I spend the most time with my trusty Canon camera? Where provides more artistic beauty per square metre than Le Louvre? Crosshaven. Crosshaven is somewhere that I have regularly visited, stayed in and explored since I was a child, as my Mom’s family originate from here. The town has so much beauty and history that is overlooked and not well known. The idea for this book was inspired by a story about a boat that used to deliver clay to Crosshaven Pier, which would then be transported to the famous Carrigaline pottery. But what other stories originated here at the Owenabue estuary? There are basic history books and tourist information leaflets available but there is nothing that ties the whole town together with a personal and welcoming feel. It is hoped that this project will appeal to both locals and tourists alike as it will give visitors an insight into the area and afford natives an opportunity to reminisce about times gone by. Cork Harbour’s Hidden Treasure is a celebration of Crosshaven and aims to highlight its beauty, history, local people and events, both past and present, through photography, typography, illustration and design. The completed project contains a very beautiful 180cm wide canvas print of Crosshaven by night, a stunning hardback book full of photographs, local stories, illustrations and even recommendations for visitors. There is a diverse selection of postcards, a limited amount of which will be available to take away on the exhibition night. Last but not least you will be able to watch a short but nevertheless spectacular aerial video of Crosshaven and surrounding bays. The exhibition opens on Thursday evening 25th May at 6pm in the James Barry Centre, CIT Bishopstown Campus and runs until May 31st. I would be delighted to meet some local faces there so please feel free to drop by. -Shaunagh O’Connell-Quinn-
